the quick-paced verses on this track jump from ending to ending, rhyme scheme to rhyme scheme, idea to idea. each verse has a fresh take on the beat, and the hooks are just as strong as the first time you heard the song. it’s constantly challenging, and that’s probably why it has kept me coming back to it. the momentum of the song slows down at the halfway point, but that only allows the slower, more minimalistic beats to take over for a minute before the final verse. it’s that contrast that allows each line of each verse to hit home in its own, individual way. this is a great track for any hip-hop fan to listen to at any time, but it’s especially fun to blast it in the car to a playlist while i commute to work.
j. cole’s been gone is a classic hip-hop track that drops you in the middle of the party. as the song opens, you hear the beat, then the intro and verse, then a short break to the chorus, then one more verse, then back to the chorus. the track is flawlessly produced. the beat is crisp and quick, the vocals are great, and the lyrics are killer. his hook is a simple two-word line that says it all. it’s a track that j. cole could have made alone, or at the very least with a co-writer or beat-producer. he did the latter, and the result is a dope track that everyone can enjoy.
indeed, that hes contemplating suicide in the streets of the hood is reflective of the pain hes already felt from this new type of fame. it wasnt the same though, hes not the same, he realizes. while hes been up in the club, he hasnt been able to sleep and only takes his pills to cope with it. the lyricism in this verse is sharp and poignant, and its one of my favorites of this album. i mean hes not the same. its not the same.
qv breaks out the bible into numbered verses and provides a verse number for each hit in the results pane. while this is a useful feature, it doesnt show you the verse count, and you cant easily change the verse context. it also doesn’t make it easy to see what verse the hit covers.
this program has a beautiful look and feel. i also like that it includes features like verse numbers, or synchronizing windows side-by-side. it has a few other nice features, too. you can set the verse count to number the verses in the verse panel, in the results panel, and in the verse panel of the notes. all three settings will apply to all three panes. you can also change the font size used in the panel. this is a great feature, and im glad they included it. you can also set the background color for each panel. my only complaint is that the verse number should be in the results pane, rather than the verse panel. qv has some nice features, but i wish the verse panel had more of a cohesive look, and made it easier to access the verse number, the full text, and the verse. i also wish it had a more consistent feel to it. perhaps a change in panel height or font size would help.
qv is a good verse search program. ive used it to search all of my bibles. i like its ease of use, and the nice high contrast look and feel. there are some features that arent quite as useful, and some shortcomings that make it less attractive than some of the other verse search programs available. the first of the shortcomings is that it doesnt show you verse number in the verse panel. i really like being able to look at the verse number of a hit in the results pane, and click on it to open the verse in the panel, and to also see the verse number in the panel. all of this is done without leaving the results pane.
