VOIE BLEU – CHARLEROI X EBCI BRUSSELS SOUTH FSX P3D Game
the charleroi x ebci brussels south fsx p3d is a fairly standard airport. it is well done and the 3d is quite good. its not quite as good as the more advanced products, but its fairly decent for the price.
the charleroi x ebci brussels south release of voie bleu seems to have gone through a series of changes. this is not bad, as the developers try to make their software easy to use. but its often hard to tell the difference between what has been added and what has been changed. for example, when you enter your activation code in the fsx version, you will notice a popup message saying that “you have an existing installation of fsx”. no wonder then that you get a message saying “this p3d version is not compatible with your existing fsx installation” if you try to run the p3d installer while having an active fsx installation!
the fsx and p3d versions of voie bleu are two seperate installers. this means that there are two installers that you can find in the windows folder. there are also two installers in the simmarket folder. the installers for the fsx and p3d versions are both 8.3mb in size. the p3d version has a slightly larger install media (9.1mb) than the fsx version (8.3mb). the reason for this is that the p3d installer adds a number of add-ons to the fsx installer. for example, the 3d airport is included in the fsx installer, but not the p3d installer. you can activate this compatibility mode by using the fsx installer and selecting the “add extras” option.
the general install process for charleroi x ebci brussels south is fairly straightforward. once you have downloaded and extracted the installers, you will notice a number of included files. these are the links to the 3d and fsx airports, scenery and the add-ons. it is also recommended to have your fsx and p3d versions installed on the same pc. this way you can use the fsx version to activate the compatibility mode. this is how i activated the compatibility mode and was able to run both fsx and p3d versions at the same time. i was able to choose the scenes for both versions using the “save preferences” tab.
the climb-out is good. the one thing that struck me immediately, is that the closest airfield to the airport, is at about a 60 degree angle. this means that, even with a 5.000ft runway, the climb-out from that airport is pretty high (5.500ft). i have not included a cockpit view of this climb-out.
the landing is ok. the main issue i had was with the lateral guidance. the thrust indicator was constantly flashing on and off, or stuck on full until a point where i could not perform any correction in that direction.
ebci is well built, and the interiors are authentic. the runway and taxiways are of bit higher details than what you will expect from an airport of that type, but apart from that, its a great-looking airport. a very nice touch is that the runway includes a sign announcing the runway number and length, allowing you to find your way.
overall, the city scenery is the weakest part of the package. the forest around the airport is fair, but it lacks detail. a couple of the populated areas are incomplete, but its not really a big deal, especially since they arent visible from the air. the airfield also has 2 airport models, even though the one in the add-on only has 3 sides. that’s why the airport is in two pieces: the main airport and the secondary runway. the runway is large enough, but not as large as its counterpart at charleroi. the runway also lacks the automatic sidewinder.
the airport uses the new glacier with surround sound and a few other features that make it a work of art. the sound quality is great overall, but i encountered a few oddities. first, when going over the europoort bridge, instead of using the audio bridges in belgium, voie bleu uses an audio bridge from the sound card i happen to be using, as made available by my sound card manufacturer. it appears to be a crippled version of the bridge, and as a result of that, the bridge is quite loud. thats not a huge issue, but its definitely a touchy subject.
