Having given some examples of how Steinberg’s foray into video stems from their roots in music recording, we will now go over a few of the bigger Audio Features, which should make Nuendo more accessible to professionals, newcomers, hobbyist and so on. However, Nuendo isn’t a patchwork programme for every requirement, it’s a professional audio production software aimed at professionals, and this means that its core features are all built on the same technology as Steinberg’s flagship products, so that Nuendo feels more or less natural to them. You can then control the playback and parameters for that sample using the new selection tool. The purpose of this feature is to enable a new way to control virtual instruments, which I suspect will find a lot of support with musicians. Using the Sampler Track also lets you join up any multiple isolated audio or MIDI clips together to make one continuous track. If you have got a DAW like Cubase or Nuendo, then joining multiple tracks together shouldn’t be too difficult. The routing for each track is set in the ‘Metronome’ tab. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll also find the control and ‘Metronome’ tabs.
The first thing you notice about the interface, which you will be making regular use of, is that Steinberg have kept it familiar and intuitive. That’s no bad thing, it is all about how easy it is to get your head around, and it is rarely a bad thing. We already know that Steinberg’s approach to their plugins for Cubase is to have them run on the host applications functions rather than just replacing them, and the same approach applies to Nuendo 2. This means that each track has its own panel, which offers functions like panning and two track displays. All the functionality is in the same place, so you’ll be able to find functions like transport, routing, effects, panning, input and output, and so on, regardless of the panel you happen to be using. Key areas for Nuendo developers, however, are the Transport and the Mixer windows. Specifically, the Send and FX buttons, along with the Output and Mix functions. These are all the same in each section, and they do exactly what you’d expect. Once you’ve got into the flow, the app is actually quite easy to get to grips with.
