this course is a continuation of phi610: harmony, presented in the first three terms. students will be introduced to the different types of chords and progressions, as well as the complementary relationship between the major and minor keys, and the modal system. we will also study the theories of major and minor tonality and their relationship to the modern system of music. students will be introduced to the differences between 12-tone and 13-tone equal temperament, as well as the just intonation system. students will also study the theory and practice of counterpoint and how it is related to musical style. the course will also cover the historical developments in harmony, music theory, and music history from the renaissance to the present day. students will be expected to practice daily, and to have a piano or percussion instrument at home for them to use during practice time.

in this course, students will be introduced to the history of western music through the lens of the study of tonality and a knowledge of the concepts of time, melody, harmony, counterpoint, and key. students will read, analyze, and play music, particularly from the baroque and classical eras. the course will also include lectures and discussions about the theories, concepts, and practices of musical composition.

this class will explore the theory and practice of thinking about how music fits into the world of information. we will begin by exploring the language of music and how it emerges from the physiological and psychological functioning of the human body. through a series of lectures, demonstrations, and written exercises we will discuss the nature of the music system as a complex adaptive system, explore musical communication across cultures, and take a historical perspective on how music has been used to communicate and to learn about the world. students will then engage in hands-on, experimental projects that will allow them to apply their knowledge of music to their lives. these projects will be the focus of the final project of the course. for students with prior musical training, this course will provide the opportunity to explore the fascinating interaction between the human body and its musical surroundings.

this class will provide you with the opportunity to work with a variety of musical instruments as well as to produce and perform music in the context of a studio environment. we will learn to identify and describe musical instruments, their usage, and their role in music. we will develop an understanding of some of the theory and history of music, such as the relationship of music to spoken language and the development of the written tradition of music. we will analyze and listen to the music of the world, from classical masterpieces to contemporary music. in doing so, we will explore the ways in which music can express and communicate with us and inspire us. we will also consider the ways in which music can be used to learn about the world and about ourselves, and the ways in which music can be used to help people with their lives. throughout the semester, we will participate in live performances of music, and we will compose and record original pieces of music. this course is open to all students, and all instruments and techniques will be taught.
