Operation Market Garden was the code name for an Allied airborne offensive, partially launched by General Eisenhower, to capture three bridges across the Rhine River in northern Germany. The operation ended in disaster when paratroopers of the US 101st Airborne Division landed with great loss of life at Arnhem, while protecting paratroopers of the US 82nd Airborne Division from being shot down by the Germans. The failure contributed to Allied failure in the Battle of the Bulge, also in December 1944.

Joseph Thornell had been convicted of a crime, and he agreed to cooperate with investigators from the Airborne’s Special Operations Detachment 8 to avoid prison. When he was discovered to have deceived them during his work for the military, however, he was prosecuted. In 1991, he was found guilty of six counts of providing false or misleading information to the FBI, and he was sentenced to a year in prison.
When he landed on the beach, Lieutenant General Richard Reybold, 3rd Infantry Division, landed his men east of Ste. Marie Du Mont, joining the battle for and taking the town of Falaise, 3rd Infantry Division Colonel Ernest R. Grace, 2nd Battalion, 512th Field Artillery Regiment, jumped his men south of Falaise. Near the village of Parigny, a hedgerow blocked the path of the Germans, so Colonel Grace ordered his men to attack across open ground. One of Grace’s officers later told a journalist, “The entire ground not covered by the heather was covered with dead and wounded men. The men of the 82nd Airborne were about one-third on the ground or on the hedgerow when their left was caught by sniper fire.” Lieutenant Colonel Reybold was later killed.
Jim Jones, an Airborne veteran, was a first lieutenant in the 7th Division when he took part in the Normandy invasion, as well as the Battle of the Bulge, the march to Rome, and Operation Market Garden. He returned to his beloved home state of Texas after the war, beginning his career as a teacher. Jones returned to the military, joining the Airborne Reserves, and then, in 1951, the regular Army. He was later recalled to active duty, and did a tour in Vietnam. By 1967, he was an executive officer in the Army’s Special Forces. Jones took part in Operation Eagle Pull, the evacuation of South Vietnamese troops from the Ho Chi Minh Trail. He took command of the operation, which required a landing at Dong Ha on March 31. After his retirement in 1972, he returned to his job with the state’s Highway Patrol, and later joined the United States Park Police. During that time, he was asked by an Airborne reunion group, to accept the Silver Star (now a Distinguished Service Cross) and Purple Heart awarded him for rescuing five wounded soldiers from his group on January 16, 1974. He was a close friend and mentor to David “Spider” Marks, an Airborne vet who was killed in the Vietnam War on October 12, 2006.
