the birth of shri manik prabhu maharaj can be related in many ways. the character of maniks great grandfather shri talakara shivappa is indelibly imprinted in maniks life. talakara shivappa though an illiterate with the least culture, he was a great devotee of lord dattatreya. he fully trusted the shri krishna as the source of all knowledge and power. he was heard to say and repeat that shri krishna was not a maharaja but a matajiraju (supreme ruler), a jagadguru (saintly teacher), a nishtanee (prophet) and a sathyashashtra (most benevolent). he used to declare loudly that shri krishna and lord hanuman were his relatives. he could easily sing all verses of the great hymns about shri krishna. the moment shri datta purana was printed in 1825 ce, he had the wonderful experience and conveyed the whole book to shri datta deva both in telugu and kannada. to hear him, it appeared as though the book was revealed directly in his ears, in his own language.
talakara shivappa had his own unique way of worshipping shri krishna, a natural method. he used to chant shri krishna””s hehe”” to shri krishna as stated in the hymn. he was a mahamantri (chief worshipper). he frequently offered water to shri krishna and did not even bother to look at the shri krishna made of gold, either held in his hands or standing in the air. he gave away whatever he got into his hands, sometimes with devotion, sometimes in self – interest. he was an ideal devotee. shri nanjundeswara rao told the story of how talakara shivappa was the first man in the village to welcome shri krishna and thus became a god-man. his whole village joined him in welcoming shri krishna. the story goes that seeing the rogues in the village, shri krishna brought from kaveri (the sacred river of god) the most peaceful and benign water. talakara shivappa sat on the bank of the river and all the rogues were reduced to silence and submission to shri krishna by water from shri krishna. shri krishna also taught talakara shivappa the true meaning of shraddha (faith). talakara shivappa for his part, continued to offer his love and devotion to shri krishna even after shri krishna had assumed his rightful place in the hearts of the villagers. shri krishna, though born at maniknagar, was to remain a god-man for as long as talakara shivappa lived.
on the seventh day of the interment ceremonies shri prabhu was born in a full form from the opening of the abdomen of the body. it was like a new god coming into this universe. shri prabhu ji was just like a baby. shri datta ji displayed the sign of aum (circle of om sign). children started running towards him. they took him from the pit and started saying hail datta ji!
the relatives of shri prabhu were carrying a change of dress and were looking for a suitable place for the shelter of datta ji. they came to a temple of lord hanuman. the lord was pleased to give this temple to shri prabhu ji.
the boy, after being dressed and brought to the temple, was sitting alone in the house. he was lonely as he did not know anybody. he had never even seen one of the close relatives of his father except his younger brother.
shri prabhu ji having explained his mission and his desire to proceed to the brahm-mandir, started walking towards it. as he went along he became the road. in less than an hour he reached his brahm-mandir with a beautiful congregation of people. everybody was praising his divine mission. everyone was following him. as he went about, many temples and important places came under his control. he took over the globe as much as he could. he also took over the entire himalayas.
arriving at the hut the close friends started advising him to take a bath. shri prabhu was delighted to hear that he had been freed from the filth of births and years. moved with a sense of pity, they went and bathed him. this was followed by a religious hymn and the bestowing of the sacred shankha (conch). after the filth had been washed off shri prabhu was feeling very fresh. he started playing with his associates, only to be asked to sing the gayatri hymn again. shri prabhu was not as well pleased with this as he was the first time and he firmly refused to take part in this performance. the same chant was sung again. shri prabhu did not wish to sing this hymn. manik at last sang the hymn himself but also felt unhappy about it.
