ASK JF: Where should I begin?
Friends, Herding Ducks in Space! was born from a fascination with Oculus Touch. The new controllers contain a touchpad on their sides, and gesture controls on the front. Both are designed to be like natural extensions of your hands. But we did not want to just imitate how you use two hands. Instead, we asked ourselves “what if we tried to create something else entirely?”
Sara Mears: So the game started as an experiment. I was at work one day and was really excited to say, “I have a game idea.” The way I looked at it, I could not replicate the experience of what a mouse-and-keyboard game offers that a good VR game should. So I was looking for another way.
ASK JF: What was the concept that started the whole thing?
Sara Mears: The game was initially influenced by playing with Lego with kids as children. We have toys for children and adults alike that place you in a different world and encourage you to be different in that world. We started to think, how would we create a game where we place you in space with a bunch of ducks and we have you herd them? It was one of those ideas that started out as a cool idea, then turned into a real game.
ASK JF: Can you explain the game’s setting?
Sara Mears: In the game you play with ducks in space. The first screen shows you the space of the game — a galaxy or island, a circular planet, whatever — and you have to herd these ducks in that space. There are multiple galaxies and they move in sync with how you are holding them. If you are holding two facing sides, they move in sync, if you hold them side by side, they follow one another. If you’ve played any other VR games, you know what it’s like to hold a hand in the real world and it doesn’t feel the same in VR.

The New York Times recently ran a story exposing a trend in the pharmaceutical industry to pressure physicians into giving off-label prescriptions to patients. The article, written by Neil Barofsky, director of the President’s action office for financial management and recovery from the federal government, details several examples of the ways Big Pharma is jockeying for position with the medical community. The article also quotes a pediatrician who said he chose to stop doing off-label prescriptions out of fear of losing all his patients.
In a related report on CBS, doctors are fearful that their practice may be destroyed if they do not comply with Big Pharma’s wishes. Today, the FDA is preparing new off-label guidelines. As Barofsky notes, it has already set precedent by publishing its “Guidance for Industry on Oncology Labeling”. And, children remain a prime target for drug marketing in the corporate world. If the drugs don’t work, legislators might throw out the regulations and fast track them.
“Based on data showing that generic versions of lamotrigine for children with epilepsy work equally well as the brand-name version, the manufacturer of generic epilepsy drugs filed a request with the Food and Drug Administration last week for fast-track designation for lamotrigine for the treatment of pediatric seizures.”
“In a recent survey, nearly one-third of kids (ages 6-11) who took high-dose off-label cholesterol-lowering drugs reported unusual side effects, such as headache, vision problems, fatigue and joint pain, even though the off-label cholesterol-lowering drugs have been linked to an increased risk of serious joint problems.”
The day may come when doctors simply stop performing off-label pharmaceutical prescriptions.
“As for pediatricians, it remains to be seen how they will treat patients who want off-label therapies, says Laurie Aronson, senior staff attorney at Consumers Union in San Francisco.
“Physicians have recognized they are going to be treated very differently from patients who request these products, and should be up front about it,” says Aronson, who has monitored efforts to gain FDA approval for drugs for children.”
