water is the fourth most widely used fuel by the human race. since the rate of human use of fresh water is increasing at a much faster rate than the rate of natural increases in fresh water supplies, we are in danger of experiencing water shortages in the not too distant future. the greatest threat to humanity in an energy crisis is the degradation of fresh water supplies, and rapid fossil fuel depletion is the largest and most complex single cause of this threat.
the old method of mineralizing tap water was to put the tap in the basement or in a shady part of the house. typically, the fresh water ran down the outside of the home by gravity before it reached the tap. this method was adequate in cities and agricultural areas where water mains were buried and plumbed in to a centralized distribution system.
if the main valve has been opened and closed, most if not all of the water should be returned to the main line. the trap should be inspected for leaks. if the trap is not dripping water, it must be flushed to remove any debris. at this point, the entire system should be drained and winterized.
fixture drains should be connected to the tank with rigid plastic or galvalume drain pipes. if the fixture is a return trap to the main line, the tank and service line should be connected with rigid or galvalume pipe. figure 9.16 shows a run of supply and waste pipes installed with 1-inch galvalume pipe. figure 9.17 shows the close-up of the fixture drain and a check valve that has been installed in the drain pipe.18 shows a large supply main, another drain from the fixture riser, and a drain connection to the tank and tank riser. the local codes may require fire or flow-rated pipe in such installations. be sure to check with the local authority before you install.
