my best friend’s dad, who was a drummer, taught me how to tune my drums. that was a huge inspiration for me to start drumming. i was like, “oh, i want to play drums.” that was like the moment when i was like, “yo, i have to really focus on this and practice.”
i was about 12 years old when i started playing drums. i was in a rock band with my best friend and two other guys. the drummer of that band was my cousin, and his father was a drummer. i heard about drums and i wanted to play drums, so i got a drum kit.
our drummer was always in trouble for being a troublemaker. he had this habit of talking so much, and distracting everyone else, that we would go through the whole show without playing a single song. and we hated the band.
i can just see what youre trying to do and if im reading you right you cant get the midi from the mics to the midi synth. if youve got a piece of software like protools just have it record what the mic is picking up, then you can connect the output to the inputs of your synth. you can set up the settings the software youre using to record midi data to something like this:
you can link the outputs of the synth to the inputs so that it records the midi data, as well as the sound going into the synth itself. then you can just have it record all the time and you can export the midi data to send to your vsti. you dont need a midi sequencer or anything, you just need your vsti to read the midi data from the software you have setup, and that software will need to be able to send the midi data to your vsti. if its a song youre playing on your guitar you can export it to midi note data in a file and open that up in your vsti. you can try putting that in the banks of your vsti and have it read it and trigger it with the songs note head. thats a bit of a pain in the ass to have to do it all over again, but its worth it if you have a lot of midi data to record.
jeff hamilton is another drummer that is really creative. idont really like his playing. its a bit too busy and lacking in substance. i find that he is a little too busy in the cymbal/hi-hat section. if you listen to his drumming, he always seems to be playing a melody, and that can be okay, but when i want to listen to the drums, its just not for me. thats a personal preference though. he has his own unique style. theres a lot of dynamics in his playing, and he has a great sense of timing. if he played more to the beat, he would be a great drummer. i really like his playing.
i met brendan o’brien in 2006, and was immediately impressed with his drumming. i was in a band called the blood and the sweat, that brendan was a part of, and he was a huge inspiration for me. ive seen him play many times, and thats another reason why i want to make a career as a drummer. and i just got the most recent scenario to come out as well, and thats another reason why i want to make a career as a drummer.
theyre just this instinctive understanding of rhythm and time thats unique. like if you were to compare them to some one else, youd be hard pressed to find a drummer thats as good as these guys. some guys just have a quick understanding of rhythm and time. and some people dont have that.
i got interested in drumming in 2006. i watched tony royster jr.’s drumming video on vhs, and i was just instantly in love with drumming. i didnt know much about drumming at the time, but ijust really wanted to play drums. thats why i was really inspired by tony. i wanted to be a drummer when i grew up, and i thought if i could become a tony royster jr. then that would be awesome.
