hey all. first off, i would like to thank all of you for all the help and information this past year (2013) on this website. this is the first time i have posted here, as i decided to focus my testing on cable boxes and the digital out on them. i live in nc, and all cable boxes i have tried have the hdmi port for avchd. i am currently on the verizon fios service, and all fios cable boxes have this port. i am trying to figure out if the signal on the tv is hd and what kind it is, as well as the audio that is sent to my tv. i was originally going to buy a $70.00/yo 3lcat-500 mini sdp 2 usb splitter in order to see the signals on the cable box and any issues that may be. however, i recently purchased a panasonic gc-v750w (disc player) with an optional hdmi cable. the cable box and player have the same components listed, but the cable box has s-video port. i have a hauppauge wintv hvr500 reciever and tuner/dvd player. it has been working fine for what i need it to do. however, i would like to know what the signals are from the cable box and if this player is capable of sending the audio to a tv. i’m currently going over to see if i can get my tv to show up on the lan and buy a networked avid hd player, but i just figured i would see if it is possible to stream the signal from the cable box to my monitor using my wintv hvr-500 and the optional hdmi cable.
so like most of you, i’m quite new to the world of avchd (except for the vcrs we had in the early 2000s) and i’m a little confused as to how all this relates to my home theater setup. so far i’ve tried different hdmi cables from the cable box, directly from the cable box to my sony 700ep, and also from the cable box to my panasonic player and to my sony tv. the results i have found are pretty strange. when i’m trying to stream from the cable box to my tv ( it’s a sony from 2007) the picture is great at first but then it starts to fade out. when i plug the cable box directly into my tv, it works fine until about 45-50 seconds later when it starts to fade out. it seems to me like the video signal is getting “drowned out”? i use a panasonic amp (v3) and a sony 700ep. when i try the same connections, the same cable box from the cable company to my lg (samsung) tv, everything works fine. so what is going on?
i have used this device on a home theatre, tv and laptop with both analog and digital cables. i have a few problems with it. it records digital to analog and looks like a super duper hdcp copier. i hooked it to my hdmi cable from my receiver. it recorded the hdmi stream from my receiver to my tv. it worked great! i stopped it, hit stop, and hit play on the tv, it went back to the main menu. i changed the hdmi input from my tv to something else (like my sony bravia) and it worked. i restarted it, hit stop, and i got to my tv. i did not use the tv as a recording source. it also works great with analog digital. i have tried to make it work with digital only. it will not record to an analog only source.
that means that the splitter also has to have hdcp set up. if it does not, than your tv (and any other hdcp devices) will not be able to play that content. all vcrs will have hdcp. my cable box has hdcp. my receiver has hdcp.
the bk-712 will take a coax input signal and output it to component video and audio outputs. it has to have hdcp set up, which is the case with my cable box. this means that the bk-712 will not work with a digital tv if the box does not have hdcp set up. all analog vcrs (as well as all digital vcrs) do have hdcp set up, as do all tvs.
i have read all of the posts here and can confirm that my experience is similar to the others. i have a 4 way avaccess splitter (not mentioned here) that has worked fine for a couple of years. i had never noticed an hdcp problem until i hooked up the projector and got the hdcp error message every time i connected or disconnected the inputs. i tried the tip of turning on and off the power of the tv and projector and it had no effect at all. i have since purchased an ultra hd capture card for my pc and i have not yet noticed the error. i am not concerned about the capture card as i do not plan on using it for anything (even though it is a great card) i do not plan on hooking up any other devices to the projector so i doubt if the pc would have any effect either. another thing i have noticed is that the unit has no driver for it so i have to manually install drivers for the capture card. i have not installed drivers for the projector as i use a tv with no built in display. i just connect my projector to the pc, turn on the projector, adjust the brightness and volume, and that is it. i have not noticed a difference using the projector with the splitter/capture card vs. without the card. i just connect the tv to the splitter, turn on the tv, adjust the brightness and volume, and that is it. the difference being that if i leave the capture card disconnected, the tv shows hdcp message every time i reinsert or remove the inputs. the solution for me was to buy a 4 way splitter that does not have any hdcp at all. i have not checked the hdmi cable that connects my capture card to my pc yet, but since i do not plan on using the capture card for anything, i doubt it matters. i hope this helps someone. i have seen several people mention this problem on various forums and i figured i would add my experience here.
