For a short time last year there was a softube release of a volume six plugin collection, the S-Type Revolution. This was a smaller offering than the market-leading S-Type Series. However, I was extremely happy with the products and could not wait for the next set to be released. The second volume has finally arrived. Volume 5 of the series is sure to be a pop-out!
The S-Type has become one of the industry leaders for true-bypass, internal side-chain reverbs. While the reverb tail itself is completely mono, you can create lush stereo sounds by triggering multiple S-Types. More importantly, the S-Type’s reverb is rock solid. Its sound is right and does not struggle like other reverbs I have tried. The S-Type works best with a 2-pole reverb, the default setting, but the 3-pole setting does also work well if you are looking for a more tonal edge.
The S-Type’s ease of operation has already made it a top choice for artists like Jay-Z, Alan Holdsworth,Chris Botti, Bob Clearmountain, and more. I never found a problem to be solved with an S-Type until I went pro with the SP-9 and had to use the P-2000. Suddenly it became a hassle to switch reverbs and to find the right setting for the 3-pole setup. While the SP-9’s internal reverbs are nice for laying down drums and keys, they needed some work to make them sound great as instruments. Thus the (slightly oversized) S-Type Revolution has become my go-to reverb.
The S-Type’s internal side-chain system has always impressed me. It is very natural sounding and seems to open up a room without all of the overkill that you sometimes get with other reverbs. Even if you are looking to tweak the sound, you will find it quite an easy to do. If you are looking to try this feature, starting with a modal level is the way to go. Remember that once you “set” a modal level, that level applies to all S-Types. It seems so simple, but finding the right modal level that sounds good to you is not a problem in my experience.
this is a reverb that wont look like a mono box. it doesnt have lots of knobs and options. but i think it could use a few more. the user interface is much more straightforward than the vendors efforts with most of the channelstrip units. it has five main buttons and a couple of switches. to change presets you use the up/down arrows, which is probably the most intuitive method i’ve seen since then father-in-law of mine used his kitchen scale to mark his casts. the buttons are typically labelled with typical reverb uses.
but that is not all that producer expanded brings to the table. there are two new addons (a new ‘type’) available – pro channel (previously called channel) and pre channel (earlier known as ‘stereo channels’). these two new addons are similar to the ‘channels’ that were earlier part of producer, but differ by their use of individual hardware or virtual processors on the tsar-1. the pro channel module now allows you to build up an effects chain, and have several identical and assignable units, as detailed above, in a single unit. the pro channel adds additional controls in cases where editing the parameters with the gui isn’t possible, and gives you the chance to express yourself more with an enhanced user interface. they also contain companding logic to convert the output of more than one unit into a single channel’s input. the pre channel module differs from the first ‘stereo channel’ in that it uses a single input on the tsar-1. it’s powerful combination with the tsar-1, particularly the new true stereo algorithm, allows it to act like a ‘one-man band’ for creating wide mono soundscapes. you can go to town with it, and load up your tsar-1 with everything from a single mono channel to a full range of stereo, just like with the normal channels.
